DIY FACIAL MASKS

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

As promised, I wanted to share with you some super easy home-made masks that you can make with standard ingredients you will probably already have in your fridge and pantry. I found some of these recipes on Marie Claire and Readers Digest and have adjusted them as I experimented and according to the ingredients I had on hand – which can be used according to your specific skin needs. Remember to always follow with your usual skin care regime and moisturise!

Smooth & Glowing

Hydration Mask

1. Mix 1/2 cup of buttermilk in with two tablespoons of yogurt.

2. Leave on face for a 20 minutes and then wash off to see a glow like no other.

Tightening (smooths and tightens pores)

Yogurt Face Masks

1. Slather some plain yogurt on your face and let it sit for about 20 minutes.

2. For a revitalizing facial mask, mix 1 teaspoon plain yogurt with the juice from 1/4 slice of orange, some of the orange pulp, and 1 teaspoon aloe. Leave the mixture on your face for at least five minutes before rinsing it off.

Exfoliating and Moisturizing

Lemon Face Mask

1. Mix the juice from 1 lemon with 1/4 cup olive oil or sweet almond oil.

2. Leave on face for a 20 minutes and then wash off.

> Please never apply just lemon juice to your skin. It can cause hyperpigmentation and make your skin sensitive to the sun. Always combine small amounts with other ingredients or dilute with water to reduce the strength.

Hydration

Cocoa & Avo Mask

Avocado is extremely hydrating, cocoa is an excellent skin-soothing antioxidant, and honey is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

1. Mash one-quarter of an avocado in a small bowl.

2. Stir in one tablespoon cocoa powder and one tablespoon honey, mashing and mixing well.

3. Apply the mask to your clean, dry skin for 10 minutes and then wash off with warm water.

Nourishing

The Nourishing Honey Mask

Honey is a natural antibacterial, which makes it a perfect base for acne-fighting masks. Nutritional yeast is also excellent for treating acne, as it's rich in B-vitamins that help calm the skin barrier, especially if you're breaking out around your period.

1. Brew one cup of chamomile tea with two tea bags and let cool completely.

2. In a tiny bowl, stir together one tablespoon of raw honey, and one teaspoon of nutritional yeast.

3. Add just enough chamomile tea to the bowl to create a thicker paste that's still runny enough to spread across your skin, but not too watery.

4. Apply a thin layer to your face and let sit for 20 minutes and then rinse off.

Glowing (all skin types)

The Organic Banana Face Mask

1. Mash one-half of a banana in a bowl.

2. Mix in a tablespoon of yogurt and a tablespoon of honey.

3. Apply the mask to your face (lumps are totally fine!) and keep the mixture on for 15 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Matt skin (for oily skin)

The Breakfast Mask

1. Combine one egg yolk, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of olive oil or yogurt with a quarter of an avocado.

2. Stir well, then apply it to your face for 15-20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.

Even Skin Tone

Paw-Paw Lightening Mask

This mask is great for those who have hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tones.

1. Blend together two tablespoons of honey and a half-cup of mashed paw-paw.

2. Gently apply the mixture over your face for 15-20 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.

Fresh and rejuvenated

Tumeric & Milk Mask

1. Mix 1/4 cup milk/yogurt with enough turmeric and honey to form a thick paste.

2. Thoroughly coat your face with the mixture and let dry completely and rinse with lukewarm water.

Brightening

Oatmeal Mask

1. Combine 1/2 cup hot—not boiling—water and 1/3 cup oatmeal.

2. After the water and oatmeal have settled for two or three minutes, mix in 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons honey, and 1 small egg white.

3. Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.

Brightening & Glowing

Honey Citrus Mask

1. Combine three tablespoons of orange juice with a quarter-cup of honey.

2. Rub the mixture lightly over your face and then leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

Home-made toner

Vinegar toner/mask

1. Toner: After you wash your face mix 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with 2 cups water as a finishing rinse to cleanse and tighten your skin.

2. Mask: mix 1/4 cup cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water. Gently apply the solution to your face and let it dry. Wash off with warm water.

The Acne-Fighting Mask

Turmeric Mask

A secret weapon to help stop acne, is turmeric. Turmeric decreases microbial growth, sebum production and inflammation all which can cause acne. Topical turmeric also helps with discolorations or hyperpigmentation if used over a long time. Winning!

1. Mix three tablespoons of turmeric powder with water, and two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice (for some vitamin C) until it creates a thick consistency.

2. Apply to your face and leave it on for 5 minutes. Rinse and pat dry.

3. Bonus: This mixture can also be used to spot treat pimples.

Did you notice any trends? My go-to a for a quick and effective mask, is yogurt, honey and turmeric. Add a bit of citrus if available and you have a fresh and glowing face!
